Cellulite

What is Cellulite?

Cellulite is nothing but an appearance of dimples and bumps onto the skins generally at larger areas. Most of the people refer this condition as appearing like ‘cottage cheese’ and is commonly found on human parts such as buttocks, stomach and thighs. More specifically, the term is used to describe deposits of any material (generally fats) trapped in pockets of connective tissues that are situated just under the skin. Cosmetically, such condition is responsible for a progressive bulky appearance with creases and layers of fats that are visible even from the distance.

It is basically a modernized term for collections of the fat that push against the connective tissues those are just located under the skin resulting into dimpling or pucker or appearing like extra tires. One can check such condition by just pinching the skin around the upper thighs. If you pinch and you get some lumpy thing, the body might have it. It is more common in women as compared to the men especially in the women above 35 years. However, it is common in adult women. Nowadays, it is also getting common in adolescent girls and young women. This condition affects 80% of women and, with the passing of time, progressively worsens and gives rise not only to physical problems, but also to psychological ones as well. The condition may not harm any body systems.

Causes of Cellulite

Many health experts believe that this condition is caused by poor elasticity of the skin. Beneath the skins, we have many cells including the fatty cells (known as adipose tissues) that provide cushion and energy (body heat) but when these fat cells become very large for the natural fiber compartments that hold the skin, these compartments bulge-out and form odd surface (uneven layers) of the fat underneath. This entire procedure lands up in the appearance.

Let us overcome the popular belief and see how this condition affects all women, obese or slim. It is nothing but the derangement of the fatty cells beneath the skin. However, fatty women are more prone to develop it but thinner too suffer from such condition. One of the well-known causes is to have high levels of the female hormone estrogen. The hormone overall increases the fatty tissues including the mammary tissues and hence, also put on some extra weight.

Poor diet, uneven blood circulation and slow metabolism can also cause this condition. Some of the health experts believe that sluggish digestion, any kind of fluid retention and intake of any kind of toxins can also give raise to conditions like cellulite. According to on research, the woman who gets it are intended from the birth to develop it and it beings to appear in teenage girls (nearly about 14 yr) and eventually increases as she matures and when the subcutaneous skin layer starts becoming thin and redistributes.

It can often cause by from taking birth control pills and it can also be seen in women in postnatal phase. This could be due to the body might not cope-up with the waste material and get rid of tremendous estrogen flow within the body. This condition can also be caused after any traumatic injuries wherein the circulatory process has been altered.

Some of the naturopaths opine that any cause that give raise to obesity or overweighted equally contribute giving raise to cellulite also. For instance, sedentary lifestyle can lead to hardening of the connective tissues and may cause dimpling of the skin at outside. It can also be due to hereditary factors, insufficient water intake (water is a natural flusher that removes the toxins from the body and help maintaining the metabolism). Poor eating habits such as consumption of alcohol, caffeine, spicy foods etc are also few of the culprits. Medical experts do not deny smoking, stress, certain medications (sleeping pills, diuretics etc) that can cause the condition in the human body.

Hormonal changes during puberty, during pregnancy and pre/post menopausal periods can cause this condition. Certain anomalies, overproduction of estrogen, disturbance in endocrine functions etc can also increase fat storage in the body and finally result into cellulite. The person with sedentary lifestyle that lacks of exercises and physical activities is also susceptible to have cellulite. Excess consumption of saturated fats and sugary items, poor hydration etc. also contribute housing unwanted layers of the fats many where in the body that can later appear as cellulite. Poor blood circulation and poor lymphatic flow can also cause this condition according to some health experts.

There are many components that contribute in deciding the degree or stage of such condition in the human body. Some of them that have great impact on having this condition include genes, gender and the amount of the fats you have on your body. It also depends upon how thick your skin is and what is your age.

Types of Cellulite

It is some sort of fat tissue that just lies beneath the skin (called as subcutaneous layer of the skin in medical terminology) and contains constricting bands of the body tissues (generally connective tissues). Such connective tissues that vary in thickness and are tied with fat cells are held in a place by groups of fibres that protect our body, cushion body muscles and also organs. In normal state with no diseases and balanced metabolism, waste products are terminated and new cells are being generated but when the metabolism is affected or anything goes wrong, the food is being stored in the form of fats and then the fats increase gradually, it catches skin folds too and appear there as cellulite.

Some of the health experts grade the disease and others just simply classify it. However, it can be divided into two major categories; hard or solid and soft or spongy. Hard or solid one is generally seen in those women that are active. Such women include dancers, runners, sportswomen etc. and they are more susceptible to develop this kind of cellulite. Hard or solid type is quite a difficult task to cure since it does not lift from the body well. Such hard or solid cellulite is directly attached with the body muscles that are deeper and not close to the skin and therefore is harder to see.

On the other hand, soft cellulite is not as focused as that of hard one. It is therefore, much visible as compared to the hard or solid one. Generally, soft cellulites are at large areas of the body and because of that; they are not so attached with muscles deep into the body. They do not have strong connection with muscles and thus they are much looser thus make it look sagging from the body and this is because they have poorly attached with muscles and therefore have poor muscle tone. It is easier to spot and also easier to remove as compared to hard or solid cellulite.

It is quite easy to determine the condition of cellulite. To test for it, one can just lightly pinch or press an area of the tissues between the thumb and an index finger. If you are testing larger areas, take two hands and test by two palms joining together. The normal fats appear fairly smooth, whereas cellulite reveals dimples or ripples appearing just like the skin of the fruit orange. The effected tissues are also much sensitive and they are cool to touch and might appear whiter (fair complexion) as compared to rest of the body skin.

Other groups of health experts favour grading the condition. Where grade one stands for no clinical symptom but histopathology can detect underlying structural changes. Grade two shows pallor skin but no ‘orange peel’. Grade three is ‘orange peel’ and grade four consists of markedly dimpled, painful (if pinched) lumps.

How to Get Rid of Cellulite?

There are many ways to treat this condition. Physical activities such as exercises, strict diet and giving up sedentary lifestyle help a lot reducing fat and cellulite condition from the body. There are some ultramodern techniques such as laser therapy; liposuction etc can drastically reduce it and other fatty layers from the body. Health advisor agree that aerobic exercises and certain strength training are two of the best tools to win the battle. Some of the herbal supplements such as Guggulu, Eclipta, Garcinia, Indian gooseberry etc are good as health supplements that help reducing the body weight and those extra layers of the fats. One should take care while wearing clothes and shoes since poorly fitted apparels and footwear can also result into poor blood circulation and finally can result into this condition.

You should also give up certain high-calorie, high-fat and high-carbohydrate diet that can turn into fats and can get stored in the body. You should include fibre or roughage in the diet that is having fat binding capacity and can bind fats present in the intestines and can expel them out with faeces.

Environ Body Treatment with Ionzyme DF Body Profile treatment is a highly effective treatment for Celulite
(75 mins) - £65

Environ Body Treatment using IONZYME® DF MACHINE machine provides body treatments that are at the forefront of scientific skincare. The machine is the first to combine the use of active Sonophoresis and intensified Iontophoresis, and is therefore possibly the most advanced machine of its kind in the world.
The Ionzyme® DF machine enhances the penetration of these products through the skin, a crucial step because skin has a natural, waterproof barrier that hinders the penetration of vitamins. It overcomes this resistance with two tried and tested methods:

IONTOPHORESIS: - an electrical current facilitates greater penetration of vitamins into the skin. It is used for larger surface areas such as the face and neck. With conventional iontophoresis, changes are very much slower, wheras with the Ionzyme® DF machine, the skin looks and feels younger within two or three treatments.

SONOPHORESIS: - involves the use of sound waves to transport vitamin molecules through the skin. The sound used is the same made by dolphins, which produces better penetration through the skin than conventional ultrasound. It is used on limited areas such as the upper lip and character lines around the eyes, on scar tissue and on pigmentation marks.

Both methods can be combined, where necessary, for intensive treatments.
